Brain Food // Top 10 Paleo Picks

I’ve been feeling rather lethargic lately, both in body and mind.  Perhaps in part to the financial stress I’ve been facing with start-up costs, and perhaps in part to working 40 hours a week for a company I no longer believe in.  Circumstance is an easy scapegoat when it comes to stress and fatigue.  Assuming responsibility requires active participation. We often fail to consider just how healing food can be.  The food we put into our mouths nourishes our body and fuels our

    Edamame Hummus

I LOVE chickpeas!  The problem is, they don’t love me.  While experimenting in the kitchen, I discovered this delightful alternative. Edamame hummus! Ingredients 2 cups shelled, organic edamame beans 1/4 cup organic, extra-virgin olive oil 3 TBL Dijon Mustard (I prefer Mailie brand) 1 tsp. +- Himalayan sea salt 1/2 lemon squeeze 1/2 cup water Here’s How Boil beans until tender (aprox. 5-7 min if frozen). Toss ingredients (excluding salt) into blender. Pulse until desired cons

10 Tips to Better Health while on the Road

Road tripping for the past 2 weeks has reminded me just how challenging it can be to eat clean, on the go.  Billboards serve as an excellent tool in terms of navigating to the nearest Starbucks, fuel pump or fast food joint.  Alternatively, I have yet to see a sign directing to the closest farmers market, Whole Foods or Trader Joes. I’m sure we’ll see the day. In the meantime, here are a few tips to ensure a healthy traveling body… 1. Prepare yourself– Pack wholesome snacks t

However, highly contaminated ocean waters often yield fish with excessive levels of mercury. Currently, there is no U.S. government approved organic seafood.  I would recommen

Get Ripped on Plant Based Protein

Contrary to popular belief it is entirely possible to optimize your health and physique in the absence of animal products.  Don’t take my word for it.  Here is a list of superstar athletes thriving on plant based diets: 1.  Prince Fielder 2.  Mike Tyson 3.  Venus Williams Despite what conventional USDA dietary guidelines suggest, animal derived products such as meat and dairy are not necessary components of a healthy diet.  In fact, eliminating (or limiting) such products f

    Eating for Energy

Before graciously bidding farewell to the incredible island of Oahu, it is imperative that I take one last pass at Kauai’s magical Na Pali coast.  This majestic trail is nothing shy of fantasy!  Eleven miles of rugged terrain is well worth the sweat in the presence of brilliant red rock, rich cascades of green, and electric blue waters.  Having previously hiked Na Pali’s treacherous coastline, I am well aware that all provisions must be carried in and out, on your back. Mastering homemade vinaigrettes

Just as a painter is struck by color, a singer by melody, or a journalist by story, a chef is inspired by sensation. Art in all expressions, appeals to the senses.  Creativity undeniably provokes a sensational mind-body experience. Cooking however, is the one form of artistic expression that promotes the arousal of all five senses harmoniously.  The sound alerts and attracts.  The smell arouses.  The sight excites anticipatory satisfaction.  The taste intices the sweet, satis

Perhaps it’s not the fat making you FAT

Harvard’s finally catching on… Emerging studies produced by world-renowned specialists at Harvard Medical School are giving conventional dietary theories a run for their money.  Articles such as: Dietary fat is not a major determinant of body fat and The relationship between dietary fat and fatty acid intake and body, weight, diabetes, and the metabolic syndrome, are raising questions such as… What IS making us fat?  Is it the quantity of food we’re consuming or its lack of

    Monkey Food

As an avid carnivore, I must admit the mere thought of a 30 day abstinence was rather daunting. Here I am 14 days in, and I can honestly say I’ve never felt so freakishly robust.  I’ve been shredding physical activities, feeling excessively energetic & sleeping like a champ!  My ascribed constitution is that of athletic build.  Genetics, paired with a physical lifestyle has lead me to be particularly conscientious of consuming appropriate levels of protein.   Though governmen

3 Step Process to Overcoming Your Sugar Addiction

Americans generally consume an outrageous 156lb of sugar per person, annually! ARE WE A NATION OF ADDICTS?! According to compiled research derived from pubmed.gov, sugar stimulates the brain’s reward centers via the neurotransmitter dopamine. This just so happens to be the same stimulation pathway used by heroin. Certainly a sugar “addiction” renders a far less severe connotation than a heroin addiction, however, biologically speaking the two may have more in common than we’d

    Saving Second Base

Considering it’s breast cancer awareness month it only seems appropriate to pay homage to these incredible embryological tissues. Here’s the BAD news: 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. 230,000 new invasive breast cancer cases are discovered annually. More than 39,000 women will die this year of breast cancer. Here’s the GOOD news: Only 5-10% of breast cancer cases are rooted firmly in genetic abnormalities.  Genetics are precursors, no

    Seasonal Inspiration

Living in Hawaii has it’s guaranteed share of perks. However, there is one very crucial season Hawaii so casually skips over…autumn. Aside from the glorious offerings of crisp air, dried leaves piled for jumping, & warm apple cider fresh off the press; autumn exudes renewal. I’ve been examining the relationships I hold close.  With limited time, and potential expiration at any given point, it’s crucial to share of yourself only with those deserving of your energy.  Life is to
