10 Tips to Better Health while on the Road

Road tripping for the past 2 weeks has reminded me just how challenging it can be to eat clean, on the go.  Billboards serve as an excellent tool in terms of navigating to the nearest Starbucks, fuel pump or fast food joint.  Alternatively, I have yet to see a sign directing to the closest farmers market, Whole Foods or Trader Joes.

I’m sure we’ll see the day.

In the meantime, here are a few tips to ensure a healthy traveling body…

1. Prepare yourself– Pack wholesome snacks that don’t require refrigeration such as: Apples Homemade trail mix Larabars (or choice quality power bar) Preservative free jerky (Whole foods has a nice selection)

2. Maintain your morning ritual– Whether it’s a cup of joe, a morning meditation, or a shot of wheatgrass, morning rituals are essential in starting your day off right.

3. Get creative with your workouts– Sure you may not have your instructor or your go-to squat rack.  That doesn’t mean you can’t work up a hot sweat while out of your area code.  Don’t be opposed to cashing in on free starter sessions or attending classes out of your comfort zone.

4. Choose wisely– If you must participate in fast food, consider Subway.  I saw just as many Jared Fogle images as I did golden arches.  Subway has seriously infiltrated the market, and it is the lesser of two evils.

5. Priority packing– If feasible, you may want to consider bringing along a cooler (if driving) and/or Nutribullet (if flying).  My Nutribullet has been a traveling lifesaver.  With all the gluttonous indulgence that comes with vacation, it’s refreshing to begin each morning with a power packed smoothie.

6. Take the time– The majority of big cities do have healthy options.  Google maps and yelp have made it ridiculously easy to navigate your way to a health food store in unfamiliar territory.  It’s worth it to drive a bit out of your way in order to fuel your body efficiently.

7. Stay hydrated– Yeah you’ll hit more rest areas, you’ll also combat boredom-induced cravings.

8. Avoid grab-n-go snacks– 95% of the food you’ll find at a gas station is filled with empty calories.

9. Reward yourself– Don’t cheat yourself with fast food at the end of a long day.  10 hours on the road calls for a mindful sit-down dinner, treat yourself.

10. Don’t wait until you’re ravenous to eat– Plan lunch into your day. Make it a point to stop and enjoy your lunch break.
