3 Ways to Beautify the Bod with Coconut Oil
1. Try oil pulling to whiten and brighten your teeth.
Ever heard of this ‘new craze’ called oil pulling? It’s no joke! And, it’s no new new news. Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic Indian tradition that’s been around for thousands of years. Traditionally, sesame oil was used though coconut oil is commonly used today for its antibacterial properties and pleasant taste.
Here are a few of the benefits:
Strengthens teeth, gums and jaw
Prevents bad breath
Supports kidney function
How to do it:
Best in the morning, on an empty stomach (though any time of the day will work).
Use unrefined, organic, virgin coconut oil.
Use the right amount for you (no more than a tablespoon).
Swish around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes (don’t gargle).
Multi-task (I generally shower or apply makeup while oil pulling).
Spit out the oil- as you swish the oil becomes toxic, be sure not to swallow it!
Brush teeth as normal.
Try it again tomorrow. Oil pulling for the first time is often unpleasant. I encourage you to give it another go- it’s strangely addictive!
2. Moisturize with coconut oil to minimize and prevent wrinkles.
Rather than spending exorbitant amounts of money on facial creams and Botox, why not treat your skin to a naturally effective alternative? Coconut oil helps minimize wrinkles by boosting collagen production within the skin. Coconut oil also contains antioxidants that protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. And what’s more, it contains antifungal and antibacterial properties that are suggested to aid in the healing of skin- making it a perfect moisturizer for irritated, chapped or sun damaged skin.
When I first began moisturizing with coconut oil I refrained from putting it on my face, thinking it would be too greasy or promote breakouts. After finally taking a chance on it, I gladly tossed my chemically manufactured facial creams. I know I’m sounding like a ridiculous late-night infomercial, but I gotta spread the good word. My skin has never felt so soft and looked so vibrant! Plus, coconut oil is outrageously inexpensive compared to traditional ‘age-defying’ creams. Take a chance. You won’t regret it!
3. Rub oil in your hair before going to bed to repair dry, damaged hair.
Coconut oil improves scalp health, supports hair growth, and helps restore chemically damaged hair, all while adding volume and shine without the common harmful chemicals.
I must admit, I don’t have dry, damaged hair. I have that baby-fine, must be washed on the daily (to prevent a limp, lifeless greaseball) sort of situation. My boyfriend on the other hand, has that rich Columbian head of hair- the kind that grows out in afro-style if not maintained. Lately he’s been moisturizing his mop with a palm full of coconut oil and I’m telling you- it’s a game changer!
