Are You Unintentionally Perpetuating Your Sob Story?

There are no facts, only interpretations. -Friedrich Nietzsche

Hi, I’m Kate. This is my story. I’m 36 years old. I’m single, living in a lack-luster apartment in a less-than-ideal location. I drive a scooter because my transmission blew for the second time on my garbage Izusu and I can’t afford to buy a new one. I have 100k in student loan debt yet I’m still serving tables. 40+ hours of my week are spent at an unfulfilling job in order to make my monthly student loan payment of $600. The best part of it- I’m only paying off the interest, meaning my loans are actually appreciating over time. I want to live intentionally and work with purpose but I’m stuck in the rat race- guess that’s life.

Flip the script.

Aloha! I’m Kate. I’m a Health Coach, a wanderer, a dreamer, a seeker and occasionally a wackadoo woo-woo yoga instructor. This is my adventure. I’m 36 years young. I spent my 20’s studying Anthropology in an effort to financially support my desire for exploration. I wandered through Europe, North, Central and South America on student loans- it was glorious- no regrets. Once my loan repayments kicked into high gear I knew it was due time to find a way of fueling my wanderlust on my own dollar. At 34 I took a leap of faith and moved from Hawaii to Florida. I made a conscious decision to pursue my dream of working with purpose while feeding my gypsy soul. And I knew in order to do so, it was necessary to get uncomfortable. In the midst of my discomfort I met the love of my life. We moved into a modest apartment, secured flexible jobs and mapped a plan of action. By minimizing our life and expenses we’re able to focus our intentions of building a virtual Health Coaching career and participating in the 2024 olympics. I know we’re on the right track to living out our best-case-scenario. It’s only a matter of time.

Your story is your truth.

What story are you telling? Is it a snooze-fest or an epic adventure? Are you even aware of the story you’re telling? Sometimes we’re so involved in our story that we become unconscious of our limiting beliefs. Perhaps it’s time to become aware of your truth.

Ditch the sob story.

Often we tell our sob story on autopilot in order to elicit a laugh or an emotional response. But honestly, it’s not funny. And no one cares to hear a sob story- that is unless it has a champion ending. Then it’s no longer a sob story. It’s then a story of strength, resilience and triumph.

I get it, life isn’t always a smooth sailing ride on your magical unicorn-  but I assure you, you’ll get many more rainbow rides by dropping your sob story and rewriting your script.

Tell the same story, differently.

Write your story as your accustomed to telling it. Then, write it again- from a different perspective. It’s still yours- just a more confident, inspired high-vibin’ version. Practice telling your upgraded narrative every chance you get. It sounds ridiculous, but it may very well change your life.

I’d love to hear your story in the comments below. Aloha. 😉
