Saving Second Base

Considering it’s breast cancer awareness month it only seems appropriate to pay homage to these incredible embryological tissues.

Here’s the BAD news: 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. 230,000 new invasive breast cancer cases are discovered annually. More than 39,000 women will die this year of breast cancer.

Here’s the GOOD news: Only 5-10% of breast cancer cases are rooted firmly in genetic abnormalities.  Genetics are precursors, not guarantees! Lifestyle determines which genetics are expressed and which are repressed. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), a minimum of 38% of all reported cases could be prevented.

Here are the top 2 miracle drugs everyone is searching for:

1.  Clean Eating

There is no exact recipe for cancer prevention.  However, mounting research suggests that a diet low in refined carbohydrates (check out my post on carb confusion), and high in antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, as well as moderate levels of Omega-3 fatty acids may greatly reduce risk.

Eat an array of brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as: broccoli brussels sprouts kale orange squash carrots sweet potatoes berries

Integrate more Omega-3 & Omega-6 fatty acids into your diet, while reducing your intake of cholesterol (only found in animal products) as well as saturated & trans fats (generally found in processed foods). Here are a number of quality sources of Omegas: nuts fish seeds avocado unadulterated vegetable oils (such as olive or coconut)

15 Seconds to Better Health If nothing more, consider adding these 3 risk-reducing supplements into your diet

1.  Curcumin– spice derived from the turmeric plant 2.  Fish oil– look specifically for high quality EPA-DHA varieties (flaxseed oil will do the trick for those interested in vegetarian or vegan alternatives. 3.  Vitamin D

2. Move Your Body

Adequate exercise has a laundry list of health benefits & cancer prevention certainly made the list!

Rather than supporting breast cancer awareness with the purchase of pink ribbon adorned dove chocolates, perhaps spread the good word instead. Educate another on simple lifestyle adjustments that can save lives. Knowledge is power. Let’s cure cancer through prevention!
