What to Expect While Sugar Detoxing

honeycomb-rounded

Why Detox?

  1. Improves digestive function

  2. Increases energy and productivity levels

  3. Flushes toxins from the digestive system

  4. Fuels the body with vital nutrients

  5. Serves as a reboot, priming for sustainable lifestyle changes

  6. Challenges willpower and determination

Detox vs. Diet

To most, diet embodies a restrictive, short-lived plan of action in order to achieve a measure of (generally physical) gratification. Once the target number is reached- be it pounds or days, the ‘diet’ is over and things can resume as normal.

The way I see it, diet is a lifestyle. It’s about conscious consumption, daily progression and intentional living. It doesn’t focus on denial and depravation as a means of short term achievement. Instead, diet focuses on quality of life, longevity, energy and vibrancy.

Diet reminds me that I’m free to eat that- but asks of me first- is it worth it?

While doxing tends to fit the typical ‘diet’ description as: restrictive, short-lived and less than enjoyable. Detoxing maintains one significant difference- detoxing sets the stage for sustainability by promoting a fresh appreciation of nutritious whole foods.

What to expect while detoxing

Depending on your level of toxicity you may experience:

  1. Headaches

  2. Dark or unusual stool

  3. Fatigue

  4. Irritability

  5. Anxiety

  6. Impulsive behavior

  7. Insatiable cravings

  8. Depressed mood

  9. Muscle aches

  10. Insomnia, disturbed sleep, strange dreams

Not to worry. All of these side effects are normal of withdrawal. And depending upon factors such as:

  1. How long you’ve been addicted to sugar

  2. How much sugar you’re accustomed to eating

  3. Your metabolism and body chemistry

You may experience different symptoms at varying degrees.

Generally, the first day of detox is rather painless because the challenge is new and the excitement is high. Side effects are most often experienced on day 2 or 3 and tend to subside by day 3 or 4.

Tips to promote a successful detox

Detoxing is demanding of the brain. Essentially we’re dropping our habitual patterns and reprogramming the brain to accept new routines. This is a challenging feat both mentally and physically.

Physical tip: Aim to eat 3 balanced meals a day, and allow yourself snacks.By balanced think: protein, healthy fat, veggies and fiber (complex carbohydrates). Incorporating one of each (at each meal) will drastically reduce your cravings.

Mental tip: Occupy the mind. Set up a play day that doesn’t involve drinking or eating out (unless the eating out is somewhere delightfully healthy- than have at it). I set up a play day with a few friends at a ‘Break-out’ room- one of those riddle rooms in which you have to crack the code to get out. Sober fun still exists. 😉

Most importantly, remind yourself why you took on this challenge and trust that it will all be worth it!
